Recent Changes in BC’s Family Law and What Clients in Hope Should Know
I’ve been hearing that BC’s family law has changed a bit recently, especially around separation and parenting agreements. I’m going through a pretty calm split right now, and we want to keep things civil and fair without spending a fortune in court. I’m just not sure what’s new — like, do common-law couples have the same rights now, or has that shifted? Would love to know what others have learned or experienced lately.

Yeah, there have been a few updates, mostly to make things less adversarial. Common-law couples now have more similar rights to married couples when it comes to dividing property, but it still depends on your situation. Mediation is also being pushed more than court battles, which I think is a good thing. When I spoke to Lawyers in Hope, BC, they mentioned that communication and documentation are key now — the courts want to see cooperation whenever possible.
