Seriously, why does meiosis need so many phases? Mitosis is much easier — one division and done. Meiosis has like 9 steps or something. What’s the point of doing it twice? I’m so confused…

It looks complicated but there is a reason. Meiosis must do two important jobs:
Halve the chromosome number (from diploid to haploid) so when sperm + egg join, baby has normal number again.
Create genetic variation so every person is unique.
That’s why two divisions:
Meiosis I separates the homologous pairs (big reduction) + crossing over mixes genes.
Meiosis II separates the sister chromatids (like mitosis).
Without these phases of meiosis we couldn’t have sexual reproduction with variation.
