Why is meiosis so complicated??

Seriously, why does meiosis need so many phases? Mitosis is much easier — one division and done. Meiosis has like 9 steps or something. What’s the point of doing it twice? I’m so confused…

It looks complicated but there is a reason. Meiosis must do two important jobs:

Halve the chromosome number (from diploid to haploid) so when sperm + egg join, baby has normal number again.

Create genetic variation so every person is unique.

That’s why two divisions:

Meiosis I separates the homologous pairs (big reduction) + crossing over mixes genes.

Meiosis II separates the sister chromatids (like mitosis).

Without these phases of meiosis we couldn’t have sexual reproduction with variation.
