Purpose: To allow our youth a forum to freely voice: what it
is that they are angry about in life in general, in their family
(relationships with parents and siblings) social life (friends)
and law enforcement, etc.
Participants Should Know or Be Able to:
- Discuss and analyze how anger affects their social life
or lack thereof as Muslims
- Understand its affect on their participation in the Deen
fulfilling positions of Leadership.
- Determine what can be done to remedy its effects in
their lives.
Facilitator: Imam Abdul-Halim Hassan
He was the Acting Resident Imam of Masjidullah from 2004
to 2005 and the elected Resident Imam from March 2005 to
March 2009. Abdul-Halim Hassan earned the moniker of
Hajji after making pilgrimage in 1996. He has taught the
youth at Masjidullah for over ten years at the Madressa
program, teaching Beginners Arabic and also the Seerah or
Life of the Prophet. He has also taught the Life of the
Prophet to youth of other faiths in Temple and churches
throughout the area. Also, the Imam has taught sensitivity
training about Islam to teachers at Montco College.
Imam Abdul-Halim is heavily involved in Inter-Faith
relations in and around the City of Phila. He is a Board
Member of NIM (Neighborhood Interfaith Movement) as well
as a member of (ICMEP) formerly known as the
Compassionate Listening Group who sent a delegation to
Palestine/Israel.
Imam Halim is a certified G.E.D. tutor and is on the Mayor’s
Commission for Literacy. An honorary member of AASL
(African-American Student League) of Cheltenham High
School, he has frequently spoken to and interacted with
teenagers of all religious, economic, ethnic and racial
backgrounds and has an understanding of their feelings and
concerns.
Workshop #1
Introducing the Brain - Aggression, Anger or Rage?
Purpose: To facilitate an understanding of the importance of
Affect Regulation.
Participants Should Know or Be Able to:
- Understand the relation between emotion and reason
- Understand how biology, psychology, social
environments impact development
- Greater awareness of the harmful effects of
undischarged aggression and anger.
Facilitator: Imam Khary M. Atif, MSS, MLSP, LCSW, ACSW
He is an Imam affiliated with the Philadelphia Masjid; and he
is currently a Doctor of Philosophy Candidate at Bryn
Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social
Research.
Workshop #2
The Beautiful Behavioral Pattern of Prophet
Muhammad (The Prayers and the Peace be on him)
Purpose: The workshop will focus on the ayat 21 of Suratul
Ahzab in which Allah (SWA) states that “You have indeed in
the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for
anyone who hope is in Allah and the Last Day and who
remember Allah much.”
Participants Should Know or Be Able to:
- The behavioral tendencies and characteristics that
enabled Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to be an
example pattern.
- The behavioral tendencies and characteristics that
prevent us from achieving the same position.
- How the Prophet (PBUH) is a human being just
like us.
- The difference between Uswatun Hasanatun and
Sunnah.
Facilitator: Imam Muhammad Abdul-Aleem
He is a student of the late Imam Warith Deen Mohammed
(RAA) and the late Honorable Elijah Muhammad (RAA). He
attended the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University
of Saudi Arabia in 1977. He served as the Resident Imam of
Masjidullah in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1982 to 2001.
He currently serves as a visiting guest lecturer at masajid
(mosques) throughout the country. He is the compiler of the
five-volume concordance to the Holy Qur’an. He has earned
graduate degrees in secondary education concentration in
physics and environmental science. He is the author of
several books including the Excellence of Worship and
Islamic Lectures, Volume 1.
Workshop #3
Enabling Effects of Anger in Children and Strategies to Help
Purpose: This interactive workshop will discuss and review
the effects which anger has on the emotional, social and
learning capacities of children. We will review how the brain
perceives, processes and displays anger in children and
adolescents. In addition the some of the causes of childhood
anger along with strategies of identifying causes and
strategies for coping and remediation of this stressful
emotion.
Participants Should Know or Be Able to:
- Understand the causes and impact of childhood anger
- Summarize the emotional, social and learning
problems which results from anger
- Understand the role the brain plays when anger
develops
- Incorporate various strategies to cope with anger
Facilitator: Sister Valda J. Abdullah M Ed. / MS School
Psychology.
Sister Valda is an educator for over 20 years of students of
Special Education in the Norristown Area School District.
She served as the Administrator of Masjidullah’s
Madressutal Islamiyyah from 1999-2003 and 2007-2010. She
is currently seeking PA Licensure as a Family and Child
Therapist.
Workshop #4
Imam Nawawi’s Commentary on the Hadith of Prophet
Muhammad (SAW) who said, “Do not become Angry"
Purpose: The workshop will focus on the Takhreej, Shar and
various views of this hadith. In addition, it will look at the
example of the Prophet (SAW) with respect to anger, how to
remove anger and discuss praiseworthy anger.
Participants Should Know or Be Able to:
- The Takreej and Shar of the hadith
- The various views of how this hadith is interpreted
- How the Prophet (SAW) dealt with anger
- How to remove anger
- What is praiseworthy anger
Facilitator: Imam Mikal Shabazz, BSChE
He is a student of Imams, the late Warith Deen Mohammed
(RAA), the late Khairi Abdus Shakur, Muhammad Abdul
Alim, Amin Muhammad and Sheik Luqman Ahmad, a
graduate of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University’s
Intensive Shariah Workshop from the Institute of Arabic
and Islamic Sciences in America and while there was a
student of Sheiks Jaafar Idris and Jamal Al-Din Jarabozo,
among others. He has studied the Arabic and Islamic
Sciences including Tilawah, Tajweed, Qawa’id, Ulum al Quran
and Ahadith, Usul al Fiqh, Seerah and Shariah among other
subjects.
